Therapy Dog Program

The objective of the Therapy Dog
Program is to provide trained therapy dogs for organizations that would like to
have dogs visit. These organizations include (but are not limited to):
hospitals, schools, nursing homes, shelters (children or battered women as
examples), or even hospice programs. Therapy dogs have also provided
relief for the workers after the 1995 bombing and the 1999 May tornado.
SCHEDULE:
Please refer to the
Classes page for details.
DESCRIPTION:
This class provides an introduction
to therapy dog work. We discuss hospital etiquette/rules as well as what
is required of the handler and dog from Therapy Dog International (TDI).
We discuss the many facets of therapy dog work, what one can expect in this type
of volunteer activity. We share past experiences with the classes.
Students are given hospital orientation for the 3 hospitals that help sponsor
the program with OCOTC, however, students are free to go anywhere they wish for
visitation (contacts for various programs are given during the class).
Actual testing for potential new
therapy dogs is usually given on the 3rd week of class by a certified TDI
evaluator. A manual is provided to each student that includes a copy of
what will be on the therapy dog test.
PRE-REQUISITES:
(for starting the class):
Dogs must be at least 1 year old to
be tested for therapy dog work.
Dogs must have received
obedience training and graduated from OCOTC's Novice Class.
